Kay Burley Reveals Terrifying Morning Routine After Waking Up Covered in Blood

Kay Burley has shared a chilling warning from her doctor after a terrifying incident left her waking up “covered in blood” on her bathroom floor. The veteran broadcaster, who recently announced her retirement from Sky News after an incredible 36-year career, revealed how a sudden fall at home nearly cost her her life.

In an interview with The Times last June, the 64-year-old detailed her intense morning routine, which sees her rising at the crack of dawn to prepare for Kay Burley at Breakfast. Setting her alarm for 3:17 a.m., she explained how she takes a deep breath and turns on all the lights before getting out of bed—a habit she says is crucial to keeping her safe.

She learned this the hard way last year when she jumped up too quickly one morning, only to black out and crash to the floor. “Next thing, I woke up covered in blood on the bathroom floor,” she recalled, according to the Express.

Burley explained that a combination of medication to lower her blood pressure and the effects of menopause made her particularly vulnerable to sudden drops in blood pressure. “I got out of bed too quickly and just passed out in the shower,” she said.

The result was a nasty black eye that forced her to take time off work. But it wasn’t just a minor scare—her doctor warned her that the fall could have been fatal had she hit her head differently. “Luckily, I hit my head on the wall as I went down because the doctor said if I’d hit the door jamb, it would have been Goodnight Vienna,” she admitted.

Burley, who has been a staple of British television since helping to launch Sky News in 1989, has been fronting the network’s breakfast show since 2019. Despite the demands of early starts and a high-pressure job, she always maintained a disciplined routine—reading her briefing notes and tuning into the BBC World Service before heading to the studio.

Last month, in a surprise announcement at the end of her show, she revealed it would be her final appearance on Sky News. Signing off in her signature style, she reflected on a career spanning “over a million minutes of live TV news—more than anyone else in the world.”

“After covering 12 separate general elections, including Sir Keir Starmer’s victory last year, I am retiring from Sky News,” she said. “Let politicians of every party just rejoice at that news.”

She ended her farewell with a heartfelt message to her loyal viewers. “Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three-and-a-half decades—you’re awesome.”

And while she may be stepping away from the news desk, she reassured fans they haven’t seen the last of her just yet. “I will post more on my social media and hope to see you around. Please keep in touch.”
