Kate Garraway Reveals the ‘Huge Struggle’ She Faced in Secret TV Role

Kate Garraway stunned fans when she opened up about a hidden challenge she recently undertook away from Good Morning Britain. On Monday’s episode, the ITV presenter shared her behind-the-scenes experience on the hit show The Masked Singer, where she was unmasked as the hilariously quirky Spag Bol.

Speaking to her co-hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, Kate confessed that keeping her involvement in the show a secret was one of the hardest parts. “It was very exciting but traumatising for the family!” she admitted. “I got my kids to watch, and they were so confused, asking, ‘Why are you forcing us to watch in real time?’”

She revealed that even her family had no idea she was taking part, and the secrecy extended far beyond what she expected. “I didn’t even know the reveal wouldn’t happen on Saturday. That’s how much in the dark you are. I forced them to watch live, and then they said, ‘So we’re watching again tomorrow, are we, Mum?’”

Kate also detailed the extraordinary lengths the show takes to conceal the celebrities’ identities. “They pick you up and drive into a field before reaching the location,” she explained. “You’re covered from head to toe—your skin, your hair—wearing black jogging bottoms, boots, a T-shirt that says ‘Do Not Talk to Me,’ and a black visor. And you’re not allowed to speak at all!”

For someone known for her warmth and wit, the silence was especially challenging. “None of the staff or crew can talk to you, so I had to stay silent. That was a huge struggle, to be honest!” she laughed. “When I finally got to sing, I was just relieved to make a noise!”

Despite the challenges, Kate loved the experience. During her stint as Spag Bol, she performed “Look at Me” by Geri Halliwell, leaving the show’s detective panel—Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, and Mo Gilligan—completely stumped. Even guest detective Vicky McClure failed to guess her identity.

When host Joel Dommett unveiled her as the voice behind Spag Bol, the panel was left speechless. Reflecting on the moment, Kate said, “I kept telling the production team I can’t sing, but they said it doesn’t matter. It was an incredible chance to dress as spaghetti, waddle around, and try to sing. It’s been so much fun, and everyone was amazing.”

Kate wasn’t the only reveal of the night. Fellow contestant and Bake Off judge Dame Prue Leith was unmasked as Pegasus. Prue, who described herself as tone-deaf, called the experience “the most amazing thing” and praised the show for pushing her out of her comfort zone.

For Kate, the experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, proving that sometimes the best adventures happen outside your comfort zone—and in the most unexpected costumes!
