Kate Garraway Opens Up About the ‘Huge Struggle’ Away from Good Morning Britain
0Kate Garraway shared the “huge struggle” she faced while participating in ITV’s The Masked Singer, admitting how difficult it was to keep her involvement a secret. During Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Kate revealed that she was unmasked as Spag Bol on the show’s Sunday night episode, a moment that left her family shocked.
“Very exciting/traumatizing for the family!” Kate said as she recounted the experience. She explained that her kids had no idea she was part of the show, adding, “I got my kids to watch. They were very confused about it saying, ‘Why are you forcing us to watch in real-time?’, told the Mirror.
Despite the suspense, Kate confessed she was as much in the dark as her family. “I didn’t know it wasn’t going to be revealed on Saturday, that’s how much in the dark you are. I forced them to watch in real-time, and then they were like, ‘Ok, so we’re watching tomorrow then, are we, Mum?’”
The secrecy surrounding The Masked Singer was a challenge for Kate, particularly with how the production ensures no spoilers leak before the reveal. “One of the challenges is, they pick you up, they then pull into a field before you get to the location,” she explained. “You have to cover all your skin and hair and they put a black visor on you, black jogging bottoms, boots, and a T-shirt that says ‘do not talk to me.’ You’re not allowed to speak at all!”
As Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid pointed out that Kate’s voice would likely be recognizable, Kate agreed, adding, “None of the staff and crew can speak to you, so I had to be silent which was a huge struggle to be honest! So when I began to sing I was just relieved to be able to make a noise!”
While the silence was difficult for Kate, she had nothing but praise for the show. She sang “Look at Me” by Geri Halliwell in her Spag Bol costume, leaving the panel — which included Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and guest Vicky McClure — speechless when she was finally unmasked.
Reflecting on her experience, Kate said, “I can’t sing and I kept telling them (the production team) that and they said it doesn’t matter. Just to have an incredible chance to come out dressed as spaghetti and waddle around trying to sing. It’s been so much fun and everybody’s been great.”
Kate wasn’t the only celebrity unmasked on the show; Bake Off judge Dame Prue Leith also revealed herself as Pegasus, sharing that she had never sung before and was “tone deaf,” but had taken lessons to be able to “at least make a noise.”
