Hungry Sheep Storm German Supermarket in Bizarre Morning Raid

Shoppers in southern Germany got far more than they bargained for this week when dozens of sheep unexpectedly wandered into a local supermarket, turning an ordinary grocery run into a scene of rural chaos.

The unusual incident unfolded on Monday in Bavaria, where around 50 sheep broke free from a nearby field and made their way into a Penny discount supermarket. Video footage shows the animals pushing through the entrance and spilling into the store, leaving stunned customers and staff unsure how to react.

Once inside, the sheep gathered near the checkout area, huddling together for roughly 20 minutes as if they were in no rush to leave. Attempts by employees and shoppers to shoo them out by banging on counters appeared to have little effect. The animals seemed perfectly at ease, calmly milling around the store until they decided to exit on their own terms.

Local broadcaster ZDF summed up the scene by saying that “they caused utter chaos,” as bottles clattered to the floor and groceries were scattered across the aisles. In the confusion, some customers reportedly climbed onto conveyor belts and checkouts to avoid being knocked over by the roaming flock.

The sheep were later identified as part of a much larger group of around 500 animals, from which they had become separated. When they finally chose to leave, they did so at speed, charging back through the aisles toward the doors. Their dramatic departure left behind a trail of toppled items and manure, adding to the clean-up challenge for staff.

According to the clearly embarrassed shepherd, the incident may have been sparked by a simple mistake. He suggested the sheep could have confused a shopping bag with a feed bag and followed it straight into the store in search of food.

The episode quickly caught attention online, with the German embassy in London sharing an image from inside the supermarket and taking a playful tone. In a post on X, the embassy wrote: “50 runaway sheep rammed through a German supermarket in rural Baa-varia, causing shear mania on Monday morning.

“After breaking away from their 500-strong herd, the brazen sheep spent 20 mins milling around in the Penny supermarket before ewe-turning and seeing themselves out.”

Despite the disruption, the story ended on a light note. Rather than facing consequences, the sheep reportedly earned their owner a year’s supply of free food, a goodwill gesture from the supermarket in return for the viral publicity sparked by one of Bavaria’s most unexpected shopping trips.
