Harry and Meghan’s Nigerian Journey Resembles a Royal Tour with a Purpose

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent several days in Nigeria in early May, and while their visit was not officially tied to the royal family, it bore a striking resemblance to a royal tour. The purpose of their trip was to explore Nigeria’s potential inclusion in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also discussed youth mental health during their stay.

However, some critics have labeled the couple’s visit a “faux royal tour,” suggesting that this might be just the beginning of similar ventures. Royal tours are traditionally conducted by active members of the royal family to connect with diverse cultures and people worldwide.

These tours typically involve charitable activities, local entertainment, and interactions with international royal fans. Harry and Meghan’s Nigeria trip mirrored these elements, starting from the moment they were welcomed by Nigerian government officials upon their arrival.

Royal expert Gareth Russell shared his perspective with The Sun, predicting that Harry and Meghan might continue these “faux royal tours” to rebuild their image in the United States and globally. He commented, “An alternative royal family is emerging.” Russell also noted, “The problem for the Sussexes is that once you start doing anything like that, people become a lot more critical of what you do outside that — like commercial endeavors or quasi-royal tours. People will put them under more of a microscope because they’re calling it ‘The Office of Harry and Meghan.’”

Despite the scrutiny, Prince Harry remains dedicated to the Invictus Games, with plans to launch a winter edition in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since their inception in 2014, the Games have been Harry’s most significant project post his and Meghan’s departure from their royal duties.

Meghan, meanwhile, continues her philanthropic efforts alongside Harry but is also venturing into the lifestyle space. She recently soft-launched some jam from her new brand, American Riviera Orchard, and there are rumors of a cooking show on Netflix.

The couple continues to raise their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in Montecito, California, while simultaneously building their respective brands. Their evolving roles and ventures illustrate a commitment to their causes and a desire to carve out a new path, distinct from their former royal obligations.
