Is Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s Daughter Lilibet A Princess?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their newborn daughter into the world on 4th June and the world is sending wishes to the family. Nothing is sweeter than a new little royal, especially one named for the existing Queen and late Princess.  Now, people are inquisitive, what exactly is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor? What is her title and role in the family?

Sadly, Prince Harry’s daughter is not a princess yet. But her future is bright after the death of Immortal Queen Elizabeth II. William and Kate Middleton’s kids were given the title of prince or princess upon birth, but Meghan and Harry’s children don’t have the same privilege. Why? Neither Archie nor Lilibet are princes or princesses by birth.

This is not due to Harry and Meghan’s quit from their duties as senior members of the royal family and moved to North America in 2020. The point to be noted here is the Queen has 11 great-grandchildren, and only Prince William’s children have the titles of prince and princess.

There was a rule passed in 1917 by King George V – Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather – states that “The grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”

Prince William is the heir in the direct line to the throne. His father, Prince Charles is the direct heir, making William second in line. The shefinds said, his children are all in direct line to the throne, in age order. This means that Prince Harry is sixth in line to the throne, following his dad, brother, nephews, and niece. And Archie is seventh in line to the throne!

The line of succession currently includes 22 people. Lilibet’s name is not currently mentioned, though it is likely to be added soon. Like the 1917 rule states, the three of the Queen’s great-grandchildren were titled, prince and princess. Which is a long way of saying that Prince William’s two sons are princes and his daughter is a princess. The rest of the Queen’s great-grandchildren have been given the title of “Master” or “Miss.”

Archie’s official title is Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet’s title will probably be Miss Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. Similarly, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s children are also titled the same, who are also grandchildren of the Queen.

It’s also important to note that not all of the Queen’s grandchildren were given the title of prince or princess. Peter Philips, Zara Tindall, Lady Louise Windsor, and James, Viscount Severn are all grandchildren of the Queen who are not princes or princesses.
