Freddie Mercury’s alleged secret daughter dies aged 48 after cancer battle

A woman believed to be Freddie Mercury’s secret daughter has died at the age of 48 after a long battle with cancer, her family has confirmed. Known publicly only as B, her existence became widely known just last year following the publication of the biography Love, Freddie.

According to reports, B died after suffering from chordoma, a rare form of spinal cancer. Her widower told the Daily Mail that the couple had two young sons, aged 9 and 7. She first developed the illness in childhood, and it later returned in adulthood.

The revelation of B’s identity caused shock among Queen fans, as it had long been believed that Mercury had no children. Her story was made public through Love, Freddie: Freddie Mercury’s Secret Life and Love by biographer Lesley-Ann Jones. Jones has now said she was aware throughout the writing process that B’s health was fragile.

“I can say now that I knew all along, while we were writing the book, that she may not live to see it published. The fact that she did was a miracle,” Jones told The Telegraph. She added that B’s childhood cancer had been in remission before returning later in life, and that the illness played a key role in B’s decision to come forward. “The illness was the deciding factor in her decision to contact me, to tell me Freddie’s story,” Jones said.

She emphasized that B’s motivation was never financial. “She did not do it for money. Nor did she pay me. Nor would I have accepted payment from her. The mission was always to give her father back his truth… as it were, warts and all.”

In interviews conducted before her death, B spoke about the emotional toll of growing up in the shadow of her father’s fame. In August, she explained why she had long resisted sharing her story publicly. “After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my dad now belonged to everyone,” she said.

“I cried and mourned my dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. When you are 15, it’s not easy. I had to become an adult without him, and live all the structuring moments and events without his support.”

The book draws on 17 handwritten diaries that Mercury reportedly gave to B just weeks before his death on Nov. 24, 1991, from health complications related to AIDS. The diaries form the backbone of the biography and offer a deeply personal account of his life.

B is believed to have been conceived in 1976 during a brief relationship between Mercury and the wife of a close friend, a year after Bohemian Rhapsody became a global hit. Reports suggest that Mary Austin, Mercury’s former partner and close confidante who inherited a large portion of his estate, was unaware of B’s existence.

B reportedly said she was “devastated” by that reaction. Her death closes a brief but poignant chapter in the ongoing story of one of music’s most iconic figures.
