Fitness and lifestyle influencer dies eight days after a cosmetic surgery procedure went wrong
A Brazilian fitness influencer and young mother has died after complications following a breast augmentation procedure, leaving behind her small son and a grieving family.
Derleya Alves, 26, underwent surgery on February 20 but began experiencing severe abdominal pain shortly after the operation. Despite her discomfort, she remained active on social media in the days that followed, sharing glimpses of her recovery with her 26,000 Instagram followers.
In one of her final posts, she shared a video from her hospital room showing her mother helping her get dressed. She captioned the moment: “Mum getting me ready after my bath.”
Her condition soon worsened, prompting doctors to carry out extensive testing and two additional surgeries in an effort to save her life. During these procedures, surgeons repaired damage to her intestines and removed one of her ovaries.
Tragically, Alves died on Saturday night at Marabá Municipal Hospital in northern Brazil, just eight days after her initial operation.
Medical staff later identified a possible congenital abnormality in her intestines that may have contributed to the seriousness of her condition. At this stage, there is no indication of medical malpractice. Authorities are awaiting the results of a detailed medical review before confirming the exact cause of her death.
Alves was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon at the Assembleia de Deus Missão Church in Marabá.
Known online for her fitness and lifestyle content, Alves had built a modest but loyal following through her posts focused on health, motherhood, and daily life.
Her death comes amid another recent tragedy involving a Brazilian influencer. Gabriela Martins Santos de Moura, 31, died after suffering complications during an assisted reproduction procedure.
The lawyer and wellbeing advocate had been trying to conceive with her husband for two years when she underwent treatment on February 17 at a clinic in São Paulo. According to local reports, she went into cardiorespiratory arrest during the process and never regained consciousness.
It remains unclear whether she was undergoing IVF or an egg retrieval at the time.
Both cases have drawn attention to the risks associated with medical and cosmetic procedures, even those considered routine.
For Alves’ family and followers, the loss has been especially painful. Just days earlier, she was sharing hopeful moments from her recovery. Her final post now stands as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly circumstances changed.
