Tragic Death of ‘Beautiful’ Baby Boy Hours After Tonsillitis Diagnosis by Doctor

In a tragic turn of events, nine-month-old Lucas Thomas Munslow passed away hours following a misdiagnosis by doctors who had assured his parents he was suffering from a mere case of tonsillitis. The infant, in reality, was battling acute bacterial meningitis, a condition overlooked by medical staff at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, North Wales, in May 2019.

Despite the alarming symptoms including a fever and squinting, the attending doctor only noted a red throat and advised Lucas’s parents, Kimberley and Nathan, to use a throat spray, leading to his discharge. The situation took a dire turn as Lucas was readmitted the following night, deteriorating rapidly, according to the sun.

The inquest led by Coroner John Gittins highlighted the “poor practice” at the hospital and suggested the likelihood of Lucas’s survivability had he been correctly diagnosed. Following the heartbreaking ordeal, the Munslow family pursued a clinical negligence claim, resulting in a five-figure settlement, which Nathan Munslow deems insufficient, stating, “It’s an insult on a baby’s life.”

Striving for closure and focusing on their three other children, the family aims to prevent future tragedies of this nature. Gamlins Law, representing the family, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of learning from Lucas’s case to enhance diagnostic procedures and prevent similar incidents. The hospital has acknowledged the coroner’s findings and committed to improving its diagnostic approaches in rare but critical cases like Lucas’s.
