‘You Never Write a Song on a ‘Meh’ Day’: Ed Sheeran Defends Honest Lyrics About His Marriage
Ed Sheeran is standing by his choice to write openly about the highs and lows of his relationship with his wife, Cherry Seaborn. The 34-year-old singer, who headlined the opening night of Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard at The O2 last weekend, said his music has always reflected the full range of emotions not just the moments that look perfect from the outside.
Speaking at a Spotify pop-up event ahead of the show, Sheeran explained why some of his recent songs delve into difficult or intensely personal topics. “Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time,” he said.
He went on to describe the emotional intensity that fuels his songwriting. “It’s very much like heightened emotions. You never write a song on a ‘meh’ day. You always write songs like, ‘This is the most loving I’ve ever felt, this is the happiest I’ve ever felt, this is the angriest I’ve ever felt,’” Sheeran said, according to The Sun.
For Sheeran, that honesty isn’t about airing grievances or dramatising his personal life. It’s about capturing the moments that spark creativity. “They’re all like big extremities, and that’s what inspires the song. And then that’s where the song exists and that’s why people connect to the song as people have these big feelings,” he explained.

The Grammy winner added that these emotional extremes are the foundation of his craft. “I think the only time the songs will ever be created, for me at least, is in those moments of big extremes,” he said, reaffirming his belief that authentic songwriting requires vulnerability even when it involves his marriage.
Sheeran and Seaborn, who married in 2019, have kept much of their family life private despite his global fame. The couple shares two daughters, Lyra and Jupiter. Still, Sheeran’s music has long offered glimpses into his personal world, from joyful love songs to tracks shaped by grief, anxiety and conflict.
His latest comments come as fans continue to dissect the emotional weight of his newer material, some of which touches on challenges within their relationship. Rather than shy away from that scrutiny, Sheeran appears intent on reminding listeners that songwriting is a snapshot of emotion, not a diary entry written in real time.
By defending the honesty in his lyrics, Sheeran makes it clear that he sees transparency as part of the artistic process—and one of the reasons his songs resonate so deeply with audiences around the world.
