A devastating incident in Plymouth has left a 41-year-old e-bike rider with critical injuries after a collision with a car, whose driver fled the scene. The collision occurred on the evening of Friday, March 29, involving a silver Vauxhall Insignia and the victim’s electric bike.

The hit-and-run prompted an immediate and significant police response, with reports of approximately 12 police vehicles and 20 officers converging on the scene into the early hours of Saturday. The driver’s abrupt departure from the crash site led to a swift investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police, who have since apprehended a man in his twenties on multiple charges including driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, told “The Mirror“.

In their public appeal, the police detailed the events that unfolded at the Alma Road and Outland Road junction, where the collision inflicted life-threatening injuries on the e-bike rider, necessitating urgent hospitalization. Authorities have informed the victim’s next of kin as they continue their search for the involved Vauxhall Insignia, identifiable by its registration FP09FYD and anticipated front-end damage from the crash.

The suspect’s arrest on grounds of dangerous driving, impaired driving due to substance use, and leaving the scene after causing serious injury marks a crucial step in the ongoing investigation. The police have extended their gratitude to the community for their cooperation during the initial inquiries and are calling on anyone with relevant information or dash-cam footage to come forward to aid the case.

This distressing event has not only brought to light the dangers faced by cyclists and e-bike riders on the road but also the imperative need for road safety awareness and the severe consequences of driving irresponsibly. The Plymouth community, shaken by the incident, hopes for a thorough investigation and justice for the injured rider as he battles for his life in the hospital.
