Dr. Fauci reveals where the next COVID-19 spikes will come

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House medical adviser on the coronavirus, recently revealed where there will be spikes in the novel coronavirus.

Fauci said the Southeast and the Midwest — which have lower vaccination rates — will be the most vulnerable to coronavirus variants, CNBC reports. These areas may need to add restrictions to combat the variants.

  • ″(I)n some places, some states, some cities, some areas, where the level of vaccination is low and the level of virus dissemination is high, that’s where you’re going to see the spikes,” Fauci told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
  • “We have a big country with disparity in the willingness to be vaccinated,” Fauci said.
  • “There are some states where the level of vaccination of individuals is 35% or less,” he said.

Fauci and face masks

Fauci has been talking about face masks in recent weeks, especially as the delta variant has become more dominant around the world, as I wrote for the Deseret News. In fact, the World Health Organization has encouraged fully vaccinated people to wear face masks again to stop the spread of the variant.

But Fauci said the WHO’s warning needs to be considered with context.

  • “It is not comparable to look at what the WHO is recommending for the planet compared to what we in the United States, which have done generally quite well with vaccinations,” said Fauci, according to CBS News.
