“It Beggars Belief”: Abandoned Dog Bramble Rescued from Secluded Woodland
Bramble, a young dog believed to be a cross between a French Bulldog and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was found tied to a fence in a secluded woodland area on Saturday, May 25. She had been deliberately hidden behind shrubbery and trees, seemingly in the hope that no one would discover her.
The terrified dog was found by a passerby whose own curious dog led him to the spot where Bramble was abandoned. Estimated to be between one and two years old, Bramble was taken in by Dogs 4 Rescue, an Eccles-based free-roaming animal sanctuary. This charity, which has successfully rehomed over 1,600 dogs across Greater Manchester, provides care for its dogs on a 41-acre kennel-free rehabilitation retreat.
In a Facebook post, Dogs 4 Rescue shared the story of Bramble’s discovery: “No such thing as a day off in dog rescue. This morning we were tagged in a post about a dumped dog in Wythenshawe who had been found by a gentleman walking his dog. She was tied to railings behind shrubbery and trees where no one would see her. It was only because his dog was curious that he found her.”
The charity expressed disbelief at the cruelty of abandoning Bramble without water and in such a hidden location. “It beggars belief she could be abandoned where she might never be found – she didn’t even have water. She is only young, no microchip, and looks to be in season. Was this the reason she was discarded? Has her behaviour changed as a result and she was no longer the puppy someone wanted? Is being in season driving another dog in the house insane? Who knows.”
Bramble’s abandonment highlights the issue of irresponsible breeding and pet ownership. Dogs 4 Rescue emphasized the importance of not supporting breeders who perpetuate such cycles of neglect: “She is the product of breeding herself and in her moment of need it was only a passer-by who was there for her. Please don’t fund the breeders and continue this dreadful cycle. She is safe with us now and we will take the best care of her.”
In an uplifting video posted by the shelter, Bramble is shown playing with other dogs at the retreat, gradually learning to find joy again. The caption accompanying the video read: “The abandoned girl who we have called Bramble, and Callie the surrendered mum finding their joy again. The girls have become friends and everyone loves Golden Boy Cluse. If these girls were isolated in kennels their sadness would continue but integrating them into our pack means they are living in the moment. It’s dogs helping dogs and pack rehabilitation at its finest.”
