Student Shocked by Labor after Doctors Repeatedly Deny Pregnancy – then she saw baby’s head

Ellie Johnson, a 24-year-old history student, experienced an astonishing medical oversight when, despite consulting with six different doctors and undergoing various tests, including three at-home pregnancy tests and an ultrasound scan, her pregnancy went undetected until she unexpectedly went into labor. Ellie, who was on the contraceptive pill and exhibited no typical pregnancy symptoms such as a visible bump or cessation of menstrual periods, was assured by medical professionals that she was not pregnant, attributing her abdominal discomfort to a possible “blockage” in her body.

Ellie’s ordeal began in August 2018 when she first noticed abdominal pains and unexplained weight gain, which led her to seek medical advice. Despite her proactive approach to her health, including a visit to a gastroenterologist in October and undergoing blood tests that showed no pregnancy hormones, her condition remained a mystery.

Medical experts believed her symptoms were related to her digestive system, suspecting a serious blockage but failing to identify the true cause of her discomfort, told Mirror. The situation reached a critical point on December 20 when an ultrasound scan failed to reveal any signs of pregnancy. However, the very next day, after experiencing severe stomach and back pain that escalated overnight, Ellie was rushed to the emergency department.

It was only during an acute episode of pain, as she alerted a nurse, that the reality of her situation became shockingly clear. The sudden appearance of a baby’s head during an examination was the first indication Ellie had that she was pregnant and in labor. Within moments, her daughter Alicia was born, weighing 6lbs 12oz, on December 22, 2018.

Ellie was stunned by the sudden turn of events, having been under the impression, based on medical advice, that her long-term use of the contraceptive pill had reduced its effectiveness and regulated her hormones to the extent that pregnancy tests failed to detect her condition. She later surmised that the ultrasound did not pick up on her pregnancy due to her daughter’s position against her spine, which also explained the intense back pain she endured during labor.

The unexpected arrival of Alicia prompted a whirlwind of support from Ellie’s friends and family, who rallied to provide the essentials for the newborn, given the complete lack of preparation due to the unforeseen nature of the pregnancy. Despite the initial shock and Ellie’s reservations about motherhood, the bond with her daughter quickly solidified, transforming her life in ways she had never anticipated. Ellie’s friends, initially incredulous, were moved to tears upon meeting Alicia, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Ellie as she embraced her role as a mother to her “whirlwind of energy” daughter.
