Dad’s Heartbreaking Tribute After 12-Year-Old Boy Dies in Tragic ‘Worst Nightmare’
0A devastated family has been left heartbroken after the tragic death of 12-year-old Riley Townsend, a “cheeky” boy from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, who is believed to have taken his own life.
Riley, who had been diagnosed with ADHD and autism, struggled with his mental health for a long time before his passing on September 1. His family described him as an aspiring footballer with a bright future, but sadly, they say he had “had enough.”
His father, Matt Townsend, confirmed Riley’s death in a heartbreaking online post, writing, “Miss you, son, so bad. I will never forget you. This is killing me.” The post reflects the overwhelming grief felt by Riley’s family and loved ones as they try to come to terms with his loss.
Riley’s cousin, Jodie Draycott, spoke to Nottinghamshire Live about the tragedy, calling Riley an “amazing young boy” who had “a whole future in front of him.” She explained that Riley had been battling mental health issues for some time, which ultimately led to the devastating outcome.
“At the minute, his parents have got a lot going on, but they’re overwhelmed by the support,” Jodie shared. “He’d been struggling with mental health issues for a long time. Unfortunately, Riley had had enough, and it got to this point.”
Jodie fondly remembered Riley as a “cheeky chappy,” a “proper lad” who was polite and kind, especially toward his siblings. Despite his upbeat personality, his struggles with mental health became too much to bear. “His family are now going through their worst nightmare,” she added.
In the wake of Riley’s passing, his local community has come together to pay tribute. Dozens of floral arrangements and blue balloons have been placed outside his school as a mark of respect, and local football clubs plan to hold a minute’s silence before their matches this weekend to honor Riley’s memory.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to assist Riley’s family with funeral expenses, which has raised over £16,000 so far.
Nottinghamshire Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment on the incident. Riley’s death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, and the community continues to rally around his grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
