Tom Hanks’ Son Chet Hanks is stranded in Colombia without u.s. passport

Chet Hanks has found himself in an unexpected travel dilemma after realising he left his U.S. passport behind while abroad. The 35-year-old actor and musician revealed in a recent Instagram video that he is currently stuck in Colombia after attempting to return home using only his Greek passport.

Hanks had initially travelled to Puerto Rico to attend a friend’s birthday celebration. As a dual citizen of the United States and Greece, he brought along his Greek passport for the trip, noting that his American passport was close to expiring.

“Sometimes they don’t let you in the country, even if it hasn’t expired, but it’s about to expire,” he explained in the video posted. While in Puerto Rico, Hanks decided to take a short flight to Medellin, Colombia, to visit another friend. However, his travel plans hit a snag when he arrived at José María Córdova International Airport to catch his return flight to the United States.

According to Hanks, airport officials informed him that entering the U.S. with a foreign passport would require a green card. As an American citizen, he does not possess one. Greek nationals are typically allowed to travel to the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa through prior authorisation under the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, but his situation appears to have created complications.

Frustrated and uncertain about his next steps, Hanks shared his concerns openly online. “I literally have no f—ing idea what I’m gonna do,” he said. “And the only embassy to get this s— settled is in Bogotá. I don’t want to go to Bogotá, so yeah. Free me.”

His predicament quickly drew attention on social media. Many commenters referenced Cast Away, the film starring his father, Tom Hanks, which famously centres on being stranded far from home. Others suggested practical solutions, such as having someone send their U.S. passport to Colombia.

Hanks is no stranger to public scrutiny. Over the years, his personality and statements have often placed him in the spotlight. One of his most widely discussed moments came in 2021 when he introduced the phrase “White Boy Summer,” which later took on unintended associations online.

In 2024, addressing the controversy, Hanks clarified his original intent. “White boy summer was created to be fun, playful, and a celebration of fly white boys who love beautiful queens of every race,” he wrote. “Anything else that it has been twisted into to support any kind of hate or bigotry against any group of people is deplorable, and I condemn it.”
