Bradley Walsh had to bring The Chase to a sudden halt after one of the most unintentionally brilliant moments in the show’s history, all thanks to contestant Pearl. Going head-to-head with Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, Pearl was battling it out for £4,000 – but ended up leaving everyone in stitches with a move that was part blunder, part accidental genius.

The question seemed straightforward enough: “Which card game shares its name with a famous French manufacturer of fine crystal glassware?” The options were Baccarat, Canasta, and Piquet. But before the usual tense music could kick in and the timer start, Pearl blurted out: “Piquet!” right after Bradley read the options out loud, reported the Express.

Realising she might’ve just handed Mark the answer, she quickly panicked: “Oh, I don’t have to say it, do I? I’ve mucked that up, haven’t I?”

Bradley couldn’t help but laugh, completely thrown off by the surprise slip. “Pearl, you press away! Put him under pressure! That’s all right, don’t worry about it!” he chuckled. “I’ll give you a little tip, Pearl. Keep it to yourself! Okay? There’s no point in my saying this, but you’ve put… piquet! If this is right, we’re up and running.”

But then came the twist. The actual correct answer was baccarat, not piquet. And in a stroke of unexpected brilliance, Pearl had managed to lead Mark down the wrong path with her slip-up. He picked piquet too. Bradley, barely holding it together, joked: “Hopefully he doesn’t know and he’s taken your lead, that would be great if he has!”
