Boy Dies from Suspected Carbon Monoxide Poisoning on Camping Trip

Kaicy Rakai Zelden Brown, a 12-year-old boy from Earley, Berkshire, was found unresponsive in a tent by his uncle during a family camping trip on the morning of Saturday, September 14. The tragic discovery was made around 11 a.m., and despite the best efforts of emergency services, Kaicy was pronounced dead at 12:29 p.m. His grandfather, David Brown, also died during the same trip.

An inquest into Kaicy’s death was opened at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court on Thursday, September 26. Specialists are now working to determine the levels of carbon monoxide in his blood as part of the ongoing investigation, with no provisional cause of death provided yet. Senior coroner Graeme Hughes confirmed that toxicology tests would be carried out to assess carbon monoxide levels. He expressed his deep condolences to the family, saying, “My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances.”

Kaicy had been camping with his brother, uncle, and grandfather in South Wales. His uncle, who was staying in the next tent, made the heartbreaking discovery. The investigation into the exact circumstances leading to Kaicy’s death continues, with a full inquest expected in the New Year.

Friends of Kaicy’s mother, Jessica Brown, have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover funeral costs, legal fees, and a memorial in honor of Kaicy and David. The GoFundMe page, set up by Mytra Saidi, seeks to raise £5,000 to support Jessica during this devastating time.

“It is with a heavy heart we make this request for our lovely friend Jessica Brown,” Mytra Saidi wrote on the fundraising page. “On 15th [sic] September, the unimaginable happened to her son Kaicy, 12, and her father. They passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on a camping trip.”

The funds raised will also help alleviate legal disputes within the family regarding Kaicy’s final resting place. “We don’t want her to go through any more headache at this sad time,” Saidi added. The page has appealed for any donations to help ease the financial burden of this tragic accident and assist other families in need.

The investigation continues as the family and friends of Kaicy and David come to terms with their devastating loss.
