BBC Breakfast hosts Ben Thompson and Sarah Campbell were quick to issue warnings to viewers following recent backlash. On Tuesday, August 6, they were set to discuss a segment about a British man who had been enslaved for over 25 years, one of the most significant cases of modern-day slavery.
His family has since sued the government and received a record payout. The anonymous man was held captive on a traveler’s site by the Rooney family, along with 17 other vulnerable men. He was forced to work for little or no pay, fed scraps, and subjected to beatings if he didn’t comply.
Years later, the victim’s sister continues her fight for justice, finally feeling like she has won her brother suitable compensation for his years of torment and suffering. Choosing to remain anonymous due to ongoing fear of the Rooneys, the victim’s sister said on the program, “I only wish the money could fix him but it won’t,” reports the Express.
Given the distressing nature of the content, Ben and Sarah made sure to issue warnings to viewers at home. This comes after the channel faced criticism for not providing adequate warnings over graphic surgery scenes aired over the weekend.
