Philip Serrell, BBC’s Bargain Hunt Star, Updates Fans on Health After Hip Surgery: ‘I Am Turbo-Charged!’

Philip Serrell, the beloved expert on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, has charmed viewers with his antique wisdom and engaging personality for many seasons. The 70-year-old auctioneer has been open about his health both on and off the air, fostering a deeper connection with his fans, told The Mirror.

Earlier this year, after undergoing hip replacement surgery, Philip took to social media to address the concerns of fans who had expressed their well-wishes on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a heartfelt message, he wrote: “For those who enquired after today’s @BBCBargainHunt – the answer is I now have a new hip and am turbo-charged!” One supportive fan, Alan Davis, responded warmly: “You looked in a bad way Phil, that’s good news. Hope you feel fully restored soon!”

This wasn’t the first time Philip had to reassure viewers about his health. In October, he again addressed fan concerns, saying, “Thank you to those that asked, nothing major but I am the proud owner of a new hip.” A relieved follower tweeted back: “Really pleased to hear you’re OK, @PhilipSerrell. I was worried when I saw you hobbling about on a stick (well, umbrella…) on BH recently. I’ve still got my hips, but have other replacement joints, and am grateful for all of them! Enjoy the new hip!”

Philip’s journey into the world of antiques has been as colorful as the items he appraises. Starting his career trading livestock at auctions, he later retrained as a chartered surveyor specializing in antiques in 1988. Though he originally trained as a PE teacher, Philip quickly realized that teaching wasn’t his calling, leading him to pursue his passion for Fine Art and antiques.

Residing in Worcester with his wife Briony and their daughter Clementine, Philip has also found success as an author. He has penned three books chronicling his life and career: An Auctioneer’s Lot, Sold to the Man with the Tin Leg, and What Am I Bid? My Life Under the Hammer.

Philip’s television career began about 15 years ago when he was approached by the creators of Bargain Hunt. In addition to his role on that show, he also appears on Antiques Road Trip and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, where his love for cars is evident. As he continues to recover from his surgery, Philip remains a cherished figure in the world of antiques and on television, with fans eagerly following his journey both on and off the screen.
