Prince Andrew Under Pressure as Mould and Cracks Threaten Royal Lodge with £400000 Yearly Cost Looming After Stipend Cut

Prince Andrew faces increasing pressure to tackle urgent maintenance issues at Royal Lodge amid health concerns over visible mould and structural cracks in the property. Recent images have revealed worrying signs of deterioration on the exterior walls of the residence, raising alarms about potential health hazards and stewardship responsibilities. Following reports that King Charles cut off his brother’s annual £1 million stipend, the Duke of York could now face maintenance costs of up to £400,000 per year, according to The Sun.

Property expert Terry Fisher, of We Buy Any Home, emphasized the importance of addressing these issues swiftly, stating, “If Andrew doesn’t tackle the visible mould and structural cracks soon, it could have far-reaching effects. For one, if left untreated, damp and mould can lead to more serious health hazards and even impact the liveability of certain areas”, reported by the Express. Fisher added that letting these issues worsen could lead the Crown Estate to scrutinize Andrew’s stewardship of the property.

Mould and dampness can pose significant health risks, as noted by Gov.UK, which warns that these conditions produce allergens, irritants, and even toxins harmful to occupants. Healthline further reports that exposure to mould can be especially dangerous for individuals with allergies or asthma, potentially causing symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, eye irritation, and lung discomfort.

The Duke of York, who has leased Royal Lodge since 2003 under a 75-year agreement, is responsible for the upkeep of the Windsor residence. He currently shares the property with his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, and their daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. The lease terms place the burden of maintenance on Prince Andrew, who is reported to have already invested millions in repairs and updates over the years.

Complicating the situation, Prince Andrew reportedly intends to pass the property on to his daughters. However, Terry Fisher explains that royal leases often involve succession restrictions, especially concerning properties held for working members of the royal family. “Such leases aren’t always straightforward inheritance-wise; transferring the lease to non-working members of the family could likely require the Crown Estate’s approval, especially under King Charles, who might prioritise other uses for Royal properties,” Fisher remarked.

While Prince Andrew has substantial rights to occupy Royal Lodge under his lease, he may encounter obstacles in passing it on to family members without special permissions. With escalating maintenance costs and potential health concerns, the Duke faces mounting challenges in maintaining both the property’s physical integrity and its future within the royal estate.
