Andrew Garfield reveals why he is hesitant to become a father
Andrew Garfield has recently opened up about his thoughts on fatherhood, admitting that turning 40 has made him hesitant about becoming a parent. In an interview with Esquire magazine, the actor candidly shared his concerns about bringing a child into the world at this stage in his life.
“I’m already a tired guy. I don’t want to be a tired dad in real life,” Andrew confessed, drawing parallels to his current role as a father in the movie We Live in Time. While playing a dad on-screen might be one thing, Andrew expressed his hesitations about taking on the role in real life.
Reflecting on the enormity of parenthood, the Breathe actor shared his belief that “bringing a baby into the world is a huge deal, and shouldn’t be taken lightly by anyone.” For Andrew, the idea of having a child isn’t just a simple next step in life—it’s a significant responsibility that weighs heavily on him. “Bringing new life into the context of my life, there’s a heavy burden there,” he admitted.
This isn’t the first time Andrew has opened up about his feelings on starting a family. In a 2022 interview with GQ, the Spider-Man: No Way Home actor revealed that turning 40 marked a major shift in his perspective on life. “The good news is, all my high school friends, we’re all celebrating [turning 40] together,” he said, explaining that while many of his friends had already settled down and started families, he was in a different place.
“I always thought I would be the first to have kids and settle down,” he shared, reflecting on the expectations he had growing up. “And they’re all shacked up and a couple of kids deep, for the most part.” The Under the Banner of Heaven star also noted that he had to come to terms with following a different path than what was traditionally expected of him. “It’s more about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth, like ‘By this time you will have done this, and you will have at least one child,’ that kind of thing,” he said.
Despite these societal expectations, Andrew acknowledged his internal conflict, admitting, “I think I have some guilt around that… Obviously it’s easier for me as a man.” Still, Andrew seems to have accepted the unpredictability of life, concluding, “Life is in charge. We’ll see what happens.”
For now, it seems that Andrew is embracing the journey, however uncertain the future may be.
