Hilary Duff Opens Up About Family Struggles Inspiring New Album luck… or something

Hilary Duff is stepping back into music with a project that is deeply personal and shaped by years of complicated family experiences. In a new interview with Glamour, the singer and actress revealed that her upcoming album, luck… or something, draws heavily on real-life struggles, including strained relationships with her sister, Haylie Duff, and her father, Robert Duff.

The record marks Duff’s first album release in more than a decade, and she says she finally feels ready to share parts of her life that she previously kept private. Several songs have already sparked fan speculation online. Some listeners believe the track “We Don’t Talk” hints at tension between sisters, while “The Optimist” is thought to reflect Duff’s relationship with her father.

Though she did not directly confirm which songs are about whom, Duff acknowledged that family dynamics played a major role in shaping the album. “That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” she said.

Duff went on to explain that being part of a family doesn’t guarantee closeness forever, and that sometimes distance becomes part of the reality. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street,” she added.

The former Disney star also spoke openly about the emotional complexity of her upbringing. While she did not go into specific details, Duff admitted that her childhood was not always easy and that her parents’ relationship carried its own challenges. Hilary said she has had a “very complicated life,” and pointed out that “my parents had a very complicated thing.”

She acknowledged that family struggles are far from uncommon, but said it still took time before she felt comfortable sharing her own story through music. “I know it’s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now? I guess I just felt ready,” Hilary said.

Duff also explained what motivated her to return to the studio after more than 10 years away from releasing an album. She said the new project reflects not only a creative rebirth, but also a desire to connect with listeners in a more honest way than she has before.

“One, I wanted to stretch creatively, and two, I wanted to make something that I could connect with people again on the level of who I am now,” she explained. Duff added that the past decade has changed her perspective, and she believes fans may relate to the life experiences reflected in the album.

This isn’t the first time Hilary’s written about her relationship with Robert. Several songs on her 2007 album Dignity referenced his split from Susan as well as an extramarital affair, which he spoke about in a 2008 interview with Inside Edition.

“I felt like people have definitely gone through some of the similar large strokes that I have in the past 10 to 15 years,” she added. With luck… or something, Duff appears ready to show a more vulnerable side of herself, using music to explore relationships, personal growth, and the realities of family bonds that are not always perfect.
