Sydney Sweeney accuses Trump supporters of turning her Into “Their Own Pawn”
Sydney Sweeney is speaking out after finding herself pulled into a political narrative she says she never asked to be part of. In a new interview, the actress addressed being labelled “MAGA Barbie,” making it clear she feels others are projecting their own agendas onto her.
Sweeney, who has largely avoided political commentary throughout her career, was asked directly about the nickname and how it has followed her online. Her response was firm but measured.
“I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of,” she said. “And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”
The comment comes amid ongoing online discourse in which some Donald Trump supporters have embraced the label, while critics have questioned why Sweeney has not publicly rejected it. That tension came up again when she was asked why she hasn’t explicitly corrected the “MAGA Barbie” narrative if it does not reflect her beliefs.

“Why not correct the ‘MAGA Barbie’ label if it’s not true? Where is the line for you?” she was asked.
Sweeney admitted she does not have an easy answer. “I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person,” she said. “If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better’ There’s no winning.“
Her remarks highlight a growing challenge faced by public figures who try to stay out of political debates in an era when silence is often interpreted as a statement. Sweeney suggested that once a narrative takes hold online, it can be difficult to escape, no matter what is said or not said.
Rather than engaging in a back-and-forth that she believes would only escalate the situation, Sweeney emphasised that her focus remains on her work. She has consistently framed her career as centred on acting and storytelling, not public ideology.

The actress’s comments also point to the broader pressure celebrities face to publicly declare positions on divisive issues. For some, speaking out brings backlash. For others, staying quiet does the same. Sweeney’s frustration appears rooted in the idea that her identity is being defined for her by people with their own motivations.
By describing herself as a “pawn,” Sweeney underscored how little control she feels she has over how her image is used. While she acknowledged the criticism, she stopped short of offering a clear strategy for addressing it, instead expressing uncertainty about where the line should be drawn.
For now, Sweeney seems intent on maintaining distance from political labels altogether, even as the conversation around her continues without her participation.
