Lorraine Kelly Apologizes to Angela Rayner While Celebrating Grandparenthood

Lorraine Kelly issued a swift apology to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner during an interview on her ITV morning show after being interrupted by a persistent cough, reported by Wales Online.

As their conversation concluded, Lorraine said: “Angela, thank you so much, great to see you, have a lovely Christmas. Sorry I’m coughing all over the place, it’s awful!”

Angela Rayner appeared unbothered by the apology and graciously thanked Lorraine for inviting her on the show. The conversation, however, quickly took a heartwarming turn as the two bonded over their shared experiences of becoming grandparents.

During the lighthearted segment, Lorraine teased Rayner by mentioning her playful nickname: “You have many names, which we mentioned – Angela Raver, Grangela! Grangela because you are a grandmother. Did that change you?”, according to the Mirror.

Rayner, who became a grandmother at the young age of 37, confirmed how transformative the role has been. Lorraine, who recently became a grandmother herself, enthusiastically chimed in: “I know, it’s the best. Honestly, Angela, it’s the best thing in the world.”

The audience was treated to a touching photo of Angela Rayner cradling her grandchild. Lorraine couldn’t help but remark on how “gorgeous” the image was before reflecting on the emotional impact of grandparenthood. She mused: “This wee tiny person, all of a sudden you really worry about the future or you think about it more perhaps?”

Agreeing with Lorraine, Angela pointed out how grandparenting brings a completely different perspective compared to raising one’s own children. She said: “With your children, if they fall over you’re like, ‘Oh get up, it’s fine.’”

However, Rayner admitted her response as a grandmother has been far more protective and indulgent: “When you look after them it’s like, ‘Oh my god, it’s so precious.’ You’re so much more protective of them, and of course you give them more treats than you’d ever give your own children because you wouldn’t have allowed them to eat all those sweets.”

Lorraine wholeheartedly agreed, laughing: “Could not agree more!”

Rayner became a grandmother in 2017 when her eldest son Ryan welcomed baby Lilith Mae. Similarly, earlier this year, Lorraine proudly announced the arrival of her granddaughter Billie, sharing her overwhelming joy on Good Morning Britain: “She’s beautiful, she’s absolutely beautiful… I can’t stop smiling!”

The heartfelt discussion highlighted the bond grandparents share and brought a touching end to the interview, despite Lorraine’s persistent cough. Both women agreed: grandparenthood is a role unlike any other.
