Suspect Detained After Double Stabbing in Manchester Leaves Two Dead

A 23-year-old suspect has been detained under the Mental Health Act following a double stabbing in Moss Side, Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Sunday evening, according to the Guardian.

Officers were called to Great Southern Street around 5 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a stabbing incident. Emergency services attended the scene, where two men were found with injuries. Despite medical efforts, both were pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Police stated that the suspect and one of the victims were known to each other, and they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. The force described the case as an “isolated” event, assuring the public that there is “no threat to the wider public”, reported by the Sky News.

A cordon remains in place on Great Southern Street and the surrounding area as investigations continue. Authorities have requested that the public avoid the location while emergency services remain active on the scene.

In a statement, Kate Green, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice, and Fire, expressed her condolences to the victims’ families and thanked the emergency services for their swift response.

“I want to reassure the community, who will inevitably be shocked and concerned by the attack this morning, that GMP have increased visibility and are working hard with partners to ensure residents in Greater Manchester are safe now, and in the future,” Green said.

The incident has left the local community in shock, with heightened police presence in the area to provide reassurance. While authorities continue their investigation, they have emphasized that the situation poses no ongoing risk to the public.

The detained suspect underwent an assessment by medical professionals and has been placed in custody under the Mental Health Act, underscoring the complex nature of the case.

As the investigation unfolds, Greater Manchester Police have appealed to the public for any information that might assist in understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
