Three Charged in Connection to Liam Payne’s Death After Tragic Balcony Fall in Argentina

Three individuals have been charged in connection with the death of former One Direction star Liam Payne, who died in Buenos Aires on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel. The public prosecutor’s office in Argentina confirmed the arrests, with one suspect facing charges of “abandonment of a person followed by death” and drug supply. This individual reportedly “accompanied the artist on a daily basis” during his stay in Buenos Aires, according to prosecutor Andres Esteban Madrea. Additionally, a hotel employee and a third person have been charged with supplying drugs.

Prosecutors have ruled out “self-harm” in the case, stating there was no evidence of intentional harm or third-party interference in Payne’s death. The prosecutor’s office explained that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself during the fall, suggesting he may have been in “a state of semi or total unconsciousness.” According to the Guardian, the office noted, “Liam Payne was not fully conscious or was experiencing a state of noticeable decrease or loss of consciousness at the time of the fall.” This information led authorities to rule out a voluntary or intentional act, concluding that Payne may not have been aware of his actions.

Toxicology results revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system at the time of his death. Further investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis of his devices and testimony from dozens of individuals. Argentine investigators have also reviewed over 800 hours of security footage and conducted nine raids on properties across Buenos Aires as part of their inquiry. They uncovered what they believe to be narcotics and alcohol scattered around Payne’s hotel room, leading prosecutors to suggest he may have suffered a substance-related breakdown shortly before his fall.

The tragic news has impacted Payne’s music plans. The release of a new track, Do No Wrong, a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Sam Pounds, was postponed. Initially set for release on November 1, Pounds stated that the launch had been delayed as “it’s not the time yet.”

Payne’s girlfriend of two years, Kate Cassidy, had been in Argentina with him until two days before the incident. Last month, Cassidy shared that the couple had been planning to marry next year.

Payne’s death is being mourned by fans and the music community worldwide, with many remembering the impact he had during his time in One Direction and his solo career. The investigation continues as authorities seek to piece together the circumstances surrounding his tragic passing.
