Locals Voice Concerns Over Coastal Developments Near Prince Harry and Meghan’s £6.3 Million Holiday Home

Residents near Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s £6.3 million holiday home in Comporta, Portugal, are raising concerns about the increasing trend of wealthy foreigners purchasing coastal properties. Local frustrations are mounting as new regulations allow developers to privatize sections of public beaches, limiting access for long-time residents.

The changes have sparked outrage among those who feel that coastal areas, once freely enjoyed by the community, are being taken over by luxury developments. Previously, building on public beaches was restricted, but new rules now permit developers to claim portions of these natural spaces, creating exclusive areas for high-end buyers. The Mirror reported on this controversial shift, which has upset many locals.

Bradley McGuinness, a local resident, shared his frustration, stating, “It’s the worst thing to happen to the Portuguese coast.” His sentiments were echoed by Andre Andrade, who lamented the loss of land that has been cherished by local families for generations. “It feels like we’re losing a part of our heritage,” Andrade added.

Diana Queiroz, another resident, also voiced her disappointment. “I have been going to this place for years, camped there several times, and because of this company, this is no longer possible,” she said, referring to the development projects that have restricted access to areas she once frequented.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s holiday home is located in the exclusive CostaTerra Gold and Ocean Club, which is designed by Denton House, a developer known for upscale properties. The area, about an hour south of Lisbon, boasts breathtaking beaches and is renowned as a secluded retreat for the wealthy. The couple’s property is situated near the summer residence of Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, adding to its high-profile allure.

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan have settled into a £23.6 million mansion in Montecito, California, where they live with their family near celebrity neighbours like Ellen DeGeneres and Katy Perry. Their acquisition of this holiday home in Portugal has drawn attention, but it has also amplified the local debate about the privatization of coastal areas.

As development continues to encroach on public spaces, residents remain concerned about the long-term impact on their beloved beaches and local communities. The rise of exclusive developments is viewed by many as a worrying trend that risks altering the character and accessibility of Portugal’s cherished coastline.
