Met Office Issues ‘Danger to Life’ Alert as Storm Isha Approaches with Severe Weather Conditions
The Met Office has issued a severe amber weather warning, signaling a “danger to life,” as Storm Isha makes its way towards the UK. The weather service announced the storm’s name while introducing serious weather alerts for the upcoming Sunday and Monday.
Parts of the UK, including much of mainland Scotland, Orkney, and Shetland, were already under a yellow warning for snow and ice on Friday. The Met Office cautioned about potential injuries and icy conditions on roads and pathways.
Further yellow warnings for wind and rain were set for Sunday and Monday, encompassing all of Scotland except for Shetland. However, the situation has escalated with the addition of more severe amber warnings for wind in central and southern Scotland, where gusts might reach up to 80mph.
The amber warning for Storm Isha is scheduled to be in effect from 6 pm on Sunday, January 21, until 9 am on Monday. The Met Office has warned of very strong southwesterly winds developing across Northern Ireland, western England, Wales, and southern Scotland on Sunday evening. Gusts are expected to frequently reach 50-60 mph, with the possibility of hitting 70 mph in some areas and even 80 mph along exposed coastal areas.
By early Monday, the winds are predicted to turn westerly, affecting a broader region of southern Scotland and northern England before gradually subsiding throughout the morning. The Met Office’s warning highlights the potential for power cuts, travel disruptions, and life-threatening conditions, urging residents to stay alert and prepared.
