81-Hour Snowstorm Set to Blanket UK in Chaos

Get ready, Britain—the weather is about to take a dramatic turn. According to the latest weather maps, the UK is bracing for a relentless 81-hour stretch of snow and rain starting January 23. If you’re in Scotland or northern England, you might want to bundle up—this storm means business.

Snow Begins in Scotland

The snowstorm is set to kick off in Wick, Scotland, at around 9 a.m. on January 23. From there, the wintry weather will spread across northern Scotland throughout the day, blanketing areas like Inverness, Fort William, and Portree by January 24. The snowy conditions will slowly creep southward, impacting regions as far as Manchester by January 26.

Freezing Temperatures Ahead

As the snow continues to pile up, temperatures are expected to plummet. Some parts of Scotland could see lows of -9°C by January 26, so don’t forget to layer up before stepping outside.

What Experts Are Saying

Meteorologist Jim Dale of British Weather Services explained, “It’s right to say the return to snow for some—more so northern regions—following the passage of a possible storm this Friday and Saturday.”

The Met Office agrees, forecasting increasingly unsettled weather as the week progresses. Their outlook warns of rain, drizzle, and potentially windy conditions as the storm takes hold. By Friday, the UK could be in for a mix of wet, windy weather and northern snowfall, fueled by a powerful jet stream linked to North America’s recent cold spell.

A Storm on the Horizon?

The Met Office hasn’t ruled out the possibility of severe weather warnings—or even a named storm—over the coming days. While some regions may see temperatures temporarily rise above average by the end of the month, strong winds and ongoing rain or snow could make it feel much colder.

What to Expect Next

The winter weather blast is expected to last until around 6 p.m. on January 26. Afterward, conditions may remain unsettled as the storm system clears out, setting the tone for the rest of January and early February.

If you’re in the north, prepare for travel disruptions, hazardous roads, and freezing temperatures. And for those in other parts of the UK, keep an eye on the forecast—this wintry mix might make its way to you, too. Stay safe, and keep the hot chocolate handy!
