Search continues for 12-year-old swept away in river near Oranjemund

The search for 12-year-old Kaylee Hulme, who was swept away by a strong current while swimming in a river near Oranjemund, has entered its third week with no sign of the missing child. Police confirmed on Wednesday that efforts to locate her are ongoing, as her family and community continue to hold onto hope.

Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi said authorities are still actively searching for Kaylee, who disappeared on 7 January at around 11h00. She was swimming in the river when she was suddenly caught by a powerful current and pulled away. Her brother was nearby at the time, and her father was fishing close to the riverbank, but neither was able to reach her before she vanished.

Since her disappearance, the case has drawn widespread attention and concern. Local police have been joined by volunteers from South Africa, who have travelled to the area to assist with the search. Community members have also offered support in various ways, sharing information, helping with coordination, and keeping Kaylee’s story visible in the hope that it might lead to new clues.

Kaylee’s family, who live in Rosh Pinah, say they are devastated but not giving up. They “remain hopeful” that she will be found and have continued to appeal to the public for help. For them, every day without answers is painful, but they have emphasised the importance of staying united and persistent.

Cases like this highlight just how quickly everyday moments can turn into tragedy, especially around natural bodies of water where conditions can change without warning. Strong currents, even in areas that appear calm, can be dangerous, particularly for children. Community leaders have used Kaylee’s disappearance as a reminder to parents and guardians to remain vigilant around rivers, dams, and the ocean, especially during the summer months when more families spend time outdoors.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen something unusual that day, or who might have information that could assist in the search, to come forward. Even minor details could prove important. “Anyone with information is urged to contact the police on 10111 or report to the nearest police station,” authorities said.

As the search continues, Kaylee’s name remains at the forefront of many conversations across the region. Her family’s hope, supported by volunteers, police, and strangers alike, has become a powerful reminder of the role communities play in times of crisis.
