Forever finding yourself reading about great beauty salons or nail bars only to find out that they’re in London again – miles from where you live? Fear not, Vogue has your back. We’ve scoured the United Kingdom looking for the best beauty destinations from Scotland down to the South coast, and everywhere in between. From a Glasgow nail bar capable of some of the most intricate designs we’ve seen to a Yorkshire salon owned by a Vogue hairstylist, discover some of the best below.
Glasgow – NAF!
A delightfully quirky little space not far from Glasgow Central Station, NAF! offers creative manicures and clever nail art – all to the sounds of some seriously good playlists. Staff are passionate and friendly and the results are excellent – they also pride themselves on creating great nails even for “biters and pickers”. Check out their Instagram page at @nafsalon for designs ranging from subtle glitter manis to talons decorated with painstakingly drawn unicorns.
Cardiff – Goji Hair
Opened in 2015, Cardiff’s Goji salon offers a great range of hair services for both men and women in a relaxed and stylish environment just outside of the city centre. The salon is focused on ethical beauty and uses fair-trade and organic products as well as real hair extensions. Plus, they offer a very good loyalty scheme to keep you coming back for more…
Surrey – Jill Zander, A Courthouse Medispa
Whether your skin concerns surround blemishes or redness, oiliness or dryness, Jill Zander’s clinic is the place to go in Surrey (or even to travel to, if you’re not) if you’re looking for complexion perfection. Specialising in techy facials, innovative treatments and great non-surgical lifting techniques, the clinic prides itself on its highly professional staff and loyal customer base. And loyal they are – book in plenty of time to make sure to get your preferred appointment because the results are most certainly worth it.
East Yorkshire – Samantha Hillerby
The tiny village of Swanland in East Yorkshire, picturesque though it is, is not exactly where you’d imagine to find one of the UK’s most respected fashion hairstylists – but a Yorkshire girl herself, that’s where you’ll now find Samantha Hillerby (when she’s not hurtling back to London to do Vogue covers or red-carpet hair). Those covers are all displayed on the walls in this chic, understated salon, which is exactly the place to come for a subtle but ingenious hair update. “I like to spend time with clients, flipping through magazines, talking about the clothes they like; the sort of women they admire. It’s so nice being able to bring all that editorial experience into what real women want for their hair,” she says.
Hertfordshire – Gloss Bar
With one of the most impressive selections of Essie nail polishes that we’ve seen, Gloss Bar offers manicures, pedicures, waxing, tinting and threading in the centre of Watford. The furnishings and equipment are sleek and modern, the staff are efficient and professional and the prices are reasonable enough to tempt Londoners away from the city. Book in with a friend or two for a spa pedicure or a gel manicure and ask to be seated next to each other, the space is perfect for a girly catch-up.
Kent – The Chapel
Built in the 19th Century as a Baptist church in pretty Tunbridge Wells, The Chapel now houses an award-winning hair salon so popular it has since expanded to Sevenoaks, Islington and even Verbier. The original branch offers excellent cut, colour and styling services in a spacious interior, which still shows many of the features of the original chapel. The salon is also designed for privacy and relaxation – chairs are spaced in a way that ensures you won’t find yourself awkwardly catching the eye of the customer opposite you. It’s also worth mentioning that the snacks are second to none.
Birmingham – Millhouse Clinics
From chemical peels to microdermabrasion, Millhouse Clinics in Birmingham is all about getting decent results and a reliable service in a friendly setting. Staff are professional, discreet and willing to offer plenty of advice before you take the plunge, and the facilities are clean and well-outfitted with sciencey-looking tools and equipment to treat a wide array of skin concerns. Particularly good for those keen to fight the signs of ageing, though the Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion treatment is a must for those who suffer from congested or blemish-prone skin.
East Sussex – The Rye Retreat
The historic town of Rye is not the first place you’d expect to find an Aveda salon, but wind your way around enough cobbled corners and you’ll stumble across the brilliant Rye Retreat. Housing both a hair salon and a spa – as well as a picturesque relaxation garden – the retreat offers everything from massage to reflexology, using Aveda’s bestselling products. Wedding packages are also available, making it a perfect place for brides (and grooms!) to get ready for their big day.
